The International Commission on Glass (ICG), the Community of Glass Associations (CGA) and ICOM-Glass are promoting 2022 as a United Nations International Year of Glass to underline its scientific, economic and cultural roles and celebrate several anniversaries:
- 670th anniversary of first depiction of eyeglasses in a painting;
- 200 years of Fresnel Lenses in coastal lighthouses;
- 100 years since glass discovered in King Tutankhamun’s Tomb;
- 100 years of the German Society of Glass Technology (DGG);
- 70th anniversary of the Pilkington patent for Float Glass;
- 60 years of the Studio Glass Movement;
- 45th anniversary of Anderson, Mott & Van Vleck’s Nobel prize (glassy United Nations building in glass materials).
The vision of IYoG2022 is to celebrate the past, present, and future of glass following the United Nations’ goals in Agenda 2030. Specifically, to organize international glass science and art festivals, stimulate research on this transformative product and build worldwide alliances focused on science and engineering for young people, while addressing gender balance and the needs of developing countries/emerging economies.
Vetrerie Riunite, as a leading glass company specialized in technical glass for the home appliance sector, applauds this initiative, as glass is its core business and, therefore, its main purpose is to constantly develop new high-tech products for the worldwide white-industry market. Soda lime glass is also a zero-waste, 100% recyclable and sustainable product, which, consequently, responds to the global need for more sustainable products, aligning to the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Global Goals Agenda.
